Comparison and Evaluation of Apple Watch Series 4 and Samsung Galaxy Watch

Recently, Apple and Samsung have launched new production lines for smart watches. Samsung launched Galaxy Watch on the basis of the Samsung Gear series 3, while Apple launched Apple Watch Series 4. Which one is better?

No.1 Square VS Round, Two Different Models

The difference between Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch Series 4 is obviously the shape design.Samsung Galaxy Watch uses traditional circular mechanical watch style, concave rotating dial, circular screen, stainless steel frame, and durable material for back cover. Apple Watch Series 4 uses a rounded rectangular design style, covered by two square arc glass, and fixed with aluminum or stainless steel frames.

In terms of installation and disassembly, Samsung Galaxy Watch fixes the case directly with the metal element of the strap itself, similar to the quick disassembly design of traditional mechanical watches. Apple Watch slowly inserts the strap from one end into the groove of the middle frame with the help of keys on the back shell.

They are equipped with two solid keys on the right side of the case, but their functions are quite different. The round button on the right side of Apple Watch Series 4 is Digital Crown, which can rotate or press; the other button is the switch key/multitasking key. The upper button on the right side of Samsung Galaxy Watch represents the home page key/return key, while the lower button functions as the access program drawer/switch key.

No.2 Interactive Logic: Reflects the Difference between Android and iOS

The difference The difference between Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch Series 4 is very obvious in the interaction logic. Samsung Galaxy Watch runs Tizen 4.0, while Apple Watch Series 4 runs WatchOS 5, with UI designs biased toward Android and iOS. For example, Samsung Galaxy Watch inherits Android’s program drawers, APP text labels and page-turning designs, and has several different widgets in the main interface. Apple Watch is a classic dense icon arrangement with no text labels.

At the control center and notification, Apple Watch’s control center is sliding down and the notification bar is sliding up and down, basically the same as iOS. The Samsung Galaxy Watch control center slides from top to bottom, and the notification is displayed directly on the left side of the dial.

In additional, they also retain the multi-task interface design. Apple Watch’s multitasking can be jumped directly by pressing the switch key, and it can support sliding shutdown of background applications, but like notifications, it does not support all one-click shutdown. Samsung Galaxy Watch‘s multitasking is hidden in the “nearest application” in the program drawer, which supports all one-click shutdown.Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch Series support switching themes by pressing the dial for a long time. The difference is that Apple Watch simulates a 3D Touch by pressing the dial for a long time. The shock is very obvious, while Galaxy Watch only has a slight vibration.

Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch Series have built-in AI assistants. Bixby can press two buttons to wake up. It can also set shortcuts and voice wake-up on widgets. Siri can wake up by pressing a digital crown and lifting a wrist. Specific realizable functions include checking schedule, weather, opening APP and so on. Of course, the system operation and hardware design are complementary. Galaxy Watch’s revolving dial design, which is unique to Samsung, can be used for switching widgets, turning pages and so on. Apple Watch uses rotating digital crowns to switch between application and program list interfaces and turn pages.

No.3 Basic Function, Tripartite Application and Continuity

As smart watches, the basic functions,third-party application experience and endurance performance of smart watches are of great concern to consumers. In these three aspects, the performance of the two watches also has their own advantages and disadvantages. In terms of basic functions, the testing process and results of heart rate, breathing and motion recording are basically the same, because Apple has not yet online ECG function in China, so there is little difference between them in heart rate testing. However, since Samsung Galaxy Watch relies entirely on Samsung Health and an APP integrates all sports functions, the experience is more intuitive than Apple Watch, which is divided into several APPs.

In additional, it may be due to user habits and endurance restrictions. Even though Apple Watch has reached the fourth generation, it still has no built-in official sleep monitoring function and can only be implemented through third-party applications. Samsung needs to do much better in this respect. It can link Samsung’s health mobile applications to record sleep data and analyze efficiency. In third-party applications, Tizen still lags behind WatchOS in terms of number and practicability of applications, but its support for mainstream APP is fairly good. In mobile applications, Samsung Galaxy Watch is paired and controlled by Galaxy Wearable APP, which is divided into three parts: information, dial and settings. It supports displaying the remaining battery percentage, storage and storage status of the watch, directly switching the dial, setting various functions, and directly importing music into the watch, playing local songs through the built-in storage space. Apple Watch Series 4 is controlled by the Watch application built into the iPhone. The application can also set the functions of watches, add dials, enter the application market, etc. However, due to the closed ecosystem of the Apple system, it only supports synchronization of photos and music from mobile phones to watches, and can not directly transmit songs to watches. As far as compatibility is concerned, Apple Watch is only for iPhone users, while Samsung Galaxy Watch supports both iOS and Android systems, including non-Samsung Android phones. In terms of charging and endurance, Apple Watch Series 4 charges for a relatively short time, filling up in about an hour, but the endurance lasts only about a day, even if the normal standby overnight power consumption goes up to half. Samsung Galaxy Watch charges slowly and takes about two hours, but it can last for about five days at a time. Choosing the “watch only” mode can last about a month. It depends on whether you prefer lightness or more emphasis on continuity.

No.4 Waterproof Design

Apple Watch Series 4

Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch Series 4 support 50 meters waterproof, so the swimming problem is not very big, but if it is used for diving, we still need to do a good job of protection measures.

Overall, Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch Series 4 have their own strengths, but in terms of price, Samsung Galaxy Watch is much more affordable than Apple Watch Series 4.
